A summer-flowering perennial found in moist or boggy soils throughout Europe, N America, and temperate Asia. It has an aromatic rootstock and the foliage yields an aroma of wintergreen when crushed. The large heads of creamy white, almond-scented flowers appear from midst-summer to early autumn. Flowers are good to make wine, and add flavour to mead and beer.
